One of the best experiences in life is having to experience it all.

Consider me a Jose Canseco, if I tell you that I've been exposed with the best and the worst of them, but in telling you that we all came out stronger and better persons after this phase is something worthwhile for us to glean and take heed of the wisdom of adolescent years.

Growing up in a tightly knit neighborhood of 29 houses, where 6 of them can be considered your second home, where you find yourself on weekends welcoming the sunrise in a different house, or practically cooking breakfast in another. This was Post-Martial Law in the Philippines. People wanted to test the law and see if indeed we can experience "some sort of freedom". And what freedom we, even I, got.

Staying late drinking in the streets, trying out new things, going to seedy places, swapping girlie mags, or plainly staring at the wall and counting lizards. Those were the memorable moments of adolescent life soundtracked with "Just Got Lucky" and with MTV and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" on the background. (God, the many times I saw that on Betamax).

The best advice I got was in one accidental chance-upon, when I opened a door and saw a room-full of spoons and empty Bic ballpen cases; foils and a lot of contraptions to rival the labs of Dexter and make Einstein's room be considered as 'minimalist'. You can't even see who was there or what they were doing.

One of them said to me, "you can look, but don't look down on us, you can stare, but don't judge us, and one more, promise us - just promise us one thing - you can't and you won't touch this."

Those words summed up my formative adolescent years, in fact til now I consider that line to be the best advice I've ever received.

Ever.

One of the worst Text Messaging pranks 5 years ago was that Pope John Paul II was dead. Well, its April Fools Day today and the Pope is still alive, but in grave danger. So just the same, let's all pray for Him.

Update: The inevitable has happened. The Pope passed away April 2, 2005 at 2:37 PM (Eastern Time)
