Dundas Square At Night, Toronto Elm Creek Park, Mississauga Best of Both Worlds Canada (October 2004) --Hugh Newell Jacobsen At sunset, suburban life in Mississauga can be spent watching planes take off at Pearson Airport or hearing the echoing laughter of kids in the park. One wouldn't know it's dinner time unless you see the community center closing its doors, and one by one, parents and strollers make a beeline to their respective houses. Life is a walk in the park, literally. When you get to Toronto, especially at night, its like turning your subwoofers to full blast. Boom Boom Boom. Everything seems to be in motion, the humdrum of citylife drowns you. People sashaying and crisscrossing your path to get to the traincab ahead of everyone. Cars and streetcars are like a blur. You need to move or be trampled by the throng. You can tell the smell of coffee brands from shops in every streetcorner. You see end-of-day trash waiting for its dawn collection. Bright lights. Big City. Til our imminent move at the end of the month, we have the luxury of living in both places to our wishes. We enjoy both at least for a week or two. We enjoy the two cities. We've enjoyed our first month. Thank God for this new life. Pardon to end this entry with the same line people use in postcards - but i mean it - "wish you were here". Happy Thanksgiving Day! << |
