Lets Play! October 9, 2005 In the Olympic Games annals, no one probably remembers Viktor Lisitsky. In the 1964 Olympic games, he garnered 5 medals in Gymnastics which would easily place him up there, amongst the best. What makes him less known than other luminaries in gymnastics was the fact that all his medals weren't gold but silver medals. He placed 2nd in 5 events and never got a gold medal until he retired. He probably didnt receive a heroes' welcome, or a pension fit for someone who won 5 medals. Maybe because he only got silver medals, placed 2nd and not first. He wasn't a bride, but was always a bridesmaid. This weekend, I was able to witness a soccer game where scoring wasnt even made. Where the spectators were clapping for every action and not just because of a goal made or a point scored. It kept me thinking, "how enjoyable life would be if we didnt tally scores or compared ourselves against others?" "Mom, mom, did you see me kick the ball and guard our goal well?", as he reenacted how he stopped an eminent goal to happen, kicking an imaginary ball and then throwing his fist in the air. "That was cool right?" He got a warm embrace and a kiss with "Good job!" whispered to his ear as a little league game of soccer (football to other countries) ended. As he smiled back to the bench, everyone knew that as the last line of defense, indeed, he blocked 1 shot but he actually allowed the 2 goals scored in the game. In the eyes of the other parents of his teammates, he lost the game for their team. That didnt matter to him. That didnt matter to his' kid teammates as they smiled and posed for a team picture. Slapping high fives and giving each other kid winks while walking back to the parking lot. No one scored the game, only the adults kept tab. Surely the parents wanted their kid's team to win. Indeed, as Mark once commented, kids play the game, we adults just turn it into a competition. << |
