Red Bins DC Warehouse, November, 2005 No I'm not. At one point or another in one's life there have been compulsions of worrying, doubting or of following trends and patterns in our lives, short of being superstitious and wanting to follow traditions, customs and beliefs. We are sensitive to having all things in order, perfectly aligned and to our liking. I can remember moments in my life, some of them I've completely and totally let go off but looking back only reminds me of reality. Take for example these: • Arranging all 2000 CDs in albums - alphabetical by artist and by year; good thing for the ipod; perfect for OCDs • Washing used dishes while still cooking, ending without dishes to wash except for the ones used for eating • Fixing my luggage and its contents nightly while on a trip, with the mentality that I'd be going home the next day • Cleaning desks of officemates. haha, good thing, I work from home now • Opening mail and filing them as bills, trash, informative, etc before reading them all while seated "on the throne" • Love for symmetry and concentric circles, airport chairs and revolving ferris wheels and carousels • Forming words and sentences from license plates while in traffic, M NT OCD • Not leaving the house without fixing my bed :), Bree Van der Kamp Jr. -that's me • Carrying binder clipped 3 x 5 index cards to remind me of things as a replacement for a Palm Pilot or a PDA • Collecting a lot of things (lately Starbucks mugs from all cities where I've drank starbucks coffee) • Arranging all the labels of canned goods facing me so I can easily identify them upon opening the cupboard • Having different hangers for pants and shirts - all of them colored white • Returning from 16 floors down to check and recheck if I locked the apartment doors • Loving the smell of paperbacks, newly printed cardboard cards (NBA cards mostly), and leather • Buying a book, a CD or DVD everytime I visit Borders, B&N or Tower Records They say that 1 out of 50 people have obsessions or compulsions. It's always a joke that people who love cleaning, who love arranging or who can't let go off disruptions in their schedule are OCD. Sometimes it becomes funny joking about it, but it also is something that people want to be healed from since it mostly becomes a mental incapacity to be stuck in a personal thought process or belief. Here is a table of common obsessions and compulsions:Typical OCD Symptoms
After going through this table, I guess I was an OCD afterall, but because of my wife's help, I've been healed :) What remains to be my only compulsion right now? Staying healthy, making people happy and being a true Christian. ...til next entry, I have to wash my hands since I'm using a public computer. :) << |
