Happy 39th 40th Anniversary December 22, 2005
"A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. ~Mignon McLaughlin
It read 2:12:45. After 2 hours, we said goodbyes half-heartedly, as if there are more things to say. We just turned off the speakerphones, went back to our own schedules realizing that this year will be different as we are here in Mississauga and Mama and Papa are in Cebu. We won't be together this year as they celebrate their anniversary, their 39th, as well as Christmas, and other family reunions that we have sorely missed for the past 2 years.
Solid As A Tree
This year was special though. I was able to pay a surprise visit, literally, last July and in September we were able to celebrate in advance all possible parties in one package - their 23 day visit to Canada and our trips around Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara including trips to New York and California. The memory of those days linger and the images have been helpful.
If we weren't on the phone today, we could have been playing with Jake, or traipsing around Cebu, spending time with Lola, trying to make her remember us. To some extent, and to our delight, she would. Tomorrow could have been a visit to Lolo's grave and a mass perhaps. Nights would have been sinful knowing that all the pinoy foods we miss, including Lechon Cebu, that without the need for sauce and the biting taste of kinilaw would all be there! Noooo! Just the mere fact that I'm typing the word Lechon makes me salivate.
We miss the company, we miss the joy of being together. We miss the food. We miss everything. Just the same, Happy Anniversary. Next year, it won't be a long distance call, but the promise to be there to celebrate it personally with everyone. God willing....
I asked the same question to my wife before retiring to bed. "Do you think we'd reach our 39th anniversary?"
No one really knows if we would. But the promise to be able to love each other everyday, making each other feel special day in day out will assure us that even kissing with our gums, white hair and all, wrinkled and dry, everyday will be a wedding anniversary.
