Loooong Weekend : If There's A Way, There's a Whale
Toronto to Cape Cod

"Whale! Whale! 11 o'clock."

Half of the boat's ~~crew~~ passengers were practically snoozing. It was more than 30 degrees, and two of the prouder women already removed their shirts to show off some curves, not really to entertain the male seatmates but it just made the whole place hotter.

After 1 hour without any sighting (of whales), - everyone was antsy and couldn't wait. Until the naturalist on board shouted, "Whale! Whale! 11 o'clock", to auger in our initial foray to see the biggest mammals in the world - the whale.

It was already 90 minutes into our boat ride when we had the first sighting of the squirting of water from its blow hole, which they actually do to breathe air. We were practically ~~near~~ in the Atlantic Ocean. Here's the map where the arrow marks our starting point.

The show lasted for more than 45 minutes! A real treat for everyone. Whales were so near my camera, (I used a 200 mm lens) I thought they'd lunge and attack us. "Normally they wouldn't get very near", says the naturalist. "and they never attack - unless provoked.", she continued. Ha! "Or else I'll be Pinocchio or Jonah in no time." - I said to myself.

Whales have identifying marks that are like fingerprints to human beings. The naturalist on board mentioned that we saw "Freckles" - because of the 3 dots on her top side. We also saw "Ruby", which they had to scourge through their files as they discovered it was last seen in 1988. Wow 18 years ago!

"This was the best sighting we've ever had in years.", said one of the crew members to one of their mates. "Better than the one last year, remember?". "Yeah".

Well this is the best sighting I've ever had. Period!

Here's one of the better shots I took that afternoon. You could see the glimmer of the Atlantic and the waving of its tail as it propels itself into the waters.

We know that they're huge and being called a whale is not an insult to you - but an insult to the whale. They're so calm, and some scientists say that they're more intelligent than people. So call me a whale. I won't do a Zidane act if you do.
