Mabuhay Philippines Toronto Summer Festival, Toronto National Convention Center Toronto, Canada (July 29, 2006) Amongst many people who follow systems, we say that when you've not used a thing for one year, it means that you never really needed it at all. We're following this lately as we are now sorting out things we need to bring as the countdown to our move is now less than 30 days. ********* Mabuhay! [ma'bu:haI] (mah-BOO-high) [literally - "long live"]. Last Saturday, and for the first time here in Toronto, we were able to be in an all-Filipino celebration of songs and dances, of food and happenstances. It was a great feeling to be among thousands of Filipinos whose templates of lives may have been what we're undergoing at the moment. Replete with stands which sell lumpiang shanghai, avocado shake, pastillas de leche, buko pandan, barbecue and pancit palabok, the place was like the Philippines miniaturized in a thousand square foot exhibition center. You could feel the excitement in the eyes of everyone, from old timers, who probably were here for more than several decades to those who like us, have just been here for less than 2 years. Families arrived with all the kids in tow. You'd only know if the children lived here long enough once you here them speak and try to break the ice and greet you with "Mabuhay" instead of "hi" or end their sentences with the Canuck-way of "eh?", in lieu of "di ba?" ******* Just like any Pinoy, and using the system adage mentioned at the start of this entry, my appetite for anything Filipino is not really gone after one year. Although I've been away from Manila for exactly a year today, we still have Pinoy parties every now and then, and I still get excited and I still pine for some homegrown type of cooking and have not started replacing the sago with red wine, the kamoteng kahoy with poutine, the galunggong with PEI Salmon. This was proven last Saturday. After a year since I last stepped on Philippine soil, we tried authentic Filipino way of cooking - loved it! - more than the appetite, the longing to be back in the Philippines is still in me. Sino bang hindi? Mabuhay ang Pagiging Pilipino nating Lahat! ******** It's been more than a year since I last used my Lomo LCA and more than that since I posted on Once A Day (my Lomo photoblog). I brought it with me in New York, Tobermory, Cape Cod and last week when I promised myself to visit the neighboring lighthouse of Marina del Rey. Finally I was able to finish off its 12-exposure film :0 ******* Watch a slideshow of the Filipino presentation during the Mabuhay Philippines festivities. I couldn't get my camera steady taking pictures of Pinoy delicacies. Nakakatakam. << |
