A Clean Desk is a Sign of Sick Mind Mississauga, Ontario - Charles Averson It was an anecdote that my Grade 3 teacher never misses to tell me. For the whole school year, I placed a sign on my desk with my well-written complete name and my position underneath. Much like the ones we saw on desks of company executives, or from detectives like Colombo or Magnum PI :) I don't remember my position but I remember the smile on my homeroom teacher when she first saw me coming in one day with an attache-case looking bag and wiping my desk with a tissue and folding my arms ready behind the desk with my name placard on it - to start the day. I was ready to work. ******** I normally love doing things behind the desk. There was some time I worked as a field marketing man (but still had a desk job coming back from the field) and enjoyed it too. I enjoy doing some stuff outside as well. But at the end of the day, I feel natural retreating back to my desk to do some reports, compose emails, research or just plainly read a good book. ******** Going back to my current desk. I have 2 laptops for Work and for Play. "Work", defined as pure work email, some blogging, some gmail stuff, but totally devoted to ensure that my laptop wont receive virus from unsecured downloading of applications and software. While "Play" is really for music downloads, experimenting on open source applications, personal surfing and in the literal meaning of the word - playing. They used to sit, side by side. Now they're not. I've consolidated the 2 laptops using a Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) switch, with only the Video segment working 100% of the time (which is ok for now, since I was a cheapo to buy a $59 switch and not those expensive ones). Now I have a floating mouse and a superthin keyboard under the one shown. My desk is cleaner now. Although I still wipe it clean (yes, there is dust in Canada too) before I start the day. It's just that I don't have a space on my desk to place my name and just to point it out - Monica Lewinsky is not under my desk - but the 2 laptops. << |
