Cross Our Hearts Around Cebu : Part 1 Cebu City, May 18-23, 2004 No trip to Cebu should be made without visiting the Magellan's Cross. Reminder to be addressed to me, because this was my first time in the last 23 years. The present cross houses the remnants of the original cross placed by Ferdinand Magellan on the shores of Cebu on April 14, more than 400 years ago. It is almost 20 feet and its present wooden casing is made of Tindalo, a native wood of Cebu. Natives believed that the original cross had miraculous powers thus a tegula-roofed gazebo had to be built to protect it from chippings made from its base. The first baptism (from Moslem to Christianity) that took place in Cebu is seen on the ceiling paintings of the gazebo. Some other trivia about Cebu (courtesy of our tour guide and bro-in-law): 1. It is the oldest city in the Philippines, not Manila. 2. It has the oldest school and one of the best in the country, San Carlos University. 3. It houses the oldest street, Calle Colon, in the Philippines. 4. It has the country's oldest fort, Fort San Pedro, which happens to be the smallest too. 5. It is the only province to give incumbent President GMArroyo a 4:1 ratio of votes vs. FPJ. hehehe |
