Milan : Movie Review 12 Milan, Italy, June 2002 For our movie of the month (yes, we only go to the movies once a month, but watch DVDs almost everyday at home), we chose Olive Lamasan's and Raymond Lee's Milan. A very appealing movie for my wife and I as we reminisced our own Milan weekend more than 2 years ago. It was surprising to note that the facade is still unfinished even during the movie shoot. The movie also showed aspects of the Vatican (when Piolo was mesmerized with its size), Rome (Piolo at Trevi Fountain and when they had a spat at the Spanish Steps) and Venezia (St. Mark's Square and the Gondola Ride). It also had a Lake Como scene which was supposed to be romantic but it was the falling off scene for both Piolo and Claudine in the movie. Noteworthy is the fact that the movie was able to capture the essence of life of an overseas Filipino worker more than projecting a love story at its focus. For commercial purposes, they had to succeed in marketing the latter. Even the fact that they travelled from Milan to Rome to Venice had to be shown with some romance, but in reality as what Claudine's character mentioned, they never really find time to move around Italy despite all these beautiful places just hours from each other. Just because, there really is no time. The depiction of the life of our modern day heroes was carefully studied thus becoming authentic on screen. Scenes of partying during weekends and when time permits them, writing and receiving letters, multiple jobs just to earn their keep, and the bond forged by Filipinos who meet in specific places, talk about their past lives back home and of course, tsismis. The movie was made, much more than the romantic angle, to show Filipinos left here in the Philippines that life outside is not just about dollars and cents. It really is hard labor, time away from family, talagang ma-L or malungkot. What struck me from the film was their litany of woes at the start and one exclaiming "kung sana lang...walang kurakot sa gobyerno" "kung sana lang....". Very apt for people who have not made their decisions yet for the coming elections. Watch the film and enjoy. click middle of the pic to view more Milan pictures from 2 years ago |
