Parts of A Temple in Old Greece (Submitted to Photo Friday: Parts, May 14, 2004) Troy: A Movie Review This won't be an exercise to review your Greek mythology or a book review of Homer's stories. My wife and I saw our May movie of the month and enjoyed every second of the 2 hour 45 minute cinematic masterpiece. First, the cast was eye-candy for ladies, albeit excellent in their respective role portrayals. Eric Bana (Incredible Hulk, Black Hawk Down) was more than a revelation as Hector, the strong, morally upright Trojan Hero and brother to Paris, played by Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings, Black Hawk Down and Pirates of the Carribean). Orlando may have looked like a weasel in his acting but his role was realistic as a simple-thinking young prince, who knew of only one thing - that is to love. (is this why Paris the city is called the City of Love in the first place?) Brad Pitt as Achilles only had one weakness, he was too pretty on screen that you overlook the rest, his great acting, his beautiful co-actresses (Diane Kruger) and the storyline. I can predict several discussion threads devoted to his semi-naked scenes (which really were better than that of his pics throwing garbage and picking up his morning papers as seen in tabloids a year ago). Next, production values. The movie may have lacked the gigantic production of recent war epics like Saving Private Ryan, Return of the King or Braveheart. There were more one-on-one tussles here than monstrous 1000-extra cast fighting. But the movie was able to reach out to the audience and deliver the message of love of the Gods, love of our spouse, and faithfulness to one's flag. The story may have been centuries old but the message is still as apt and as recent as today's headlines - that life is an unending struggle, broken into numerous battles and raging wars, what remains constant is that we create the respect even from our enemies, win or lose.
