Kape 'Ta Bo's Coffee Club Cebu City, May 2003 "Where everybody knows your name"...isn't that the line of the jingle of the old TV show "Cheers"? Yes, I love that kind of a feeling, where everybody knows your name. I used to feel that way. That was with a coffeeshop, some 5 years ago. Well when Bo's was in Makati in 1999, I thought I found MY coffee shop. Coming from our building across the street along Salcedo, the mere touch of the handles to the store at the ground level of Ferros bldg, brings out that greeting so un-McDonald's. It wasn't contrived, nor a greeting that is said at ear-splitting hundred decibel range like some 3-letter named chicken place. Bo's greeting was very familiar, with an added sweetness to the ears. One can even bring in an Incognito CD to change the mood from their usual elevator music. Without a word, my cup is made, my coffee club card stamped and off I am transported to different world with my cup, my music, and myself. That was 5 years ago. Even with the Glorietta branch and the Seattle's Best branch downstairs who may know my name, they still don't know me, they only know me by my coffee. **** Rejoinder : The original in Cebu still lords over the place despite the recent entry of Starbucks. It can be concluded that Cebuanos know their coffee as much as they know their President. I'd gladly go there on a whim to be with my sister's fam and my lola too. |
