Days 2 and 3: D-day and Mont St. Michel Click Thumbnail to View Larger Image
Do you know your World War 2 history? Me? I did know some, but Normandy provided me with more. We visited Arromanches, the beach front where the Allied Forces on a stroke of genius made artificial docks to deliver fresh supplies to the landing troops. These floating concrete cases allowed millions of tons of tanks and artillery to enter France and re-capture it from Germany. Prior to Arromanches and the Omaha Beach, we were in Honfleur til the afternoon and had a fit counting the many painters and galleries just within meters of each other. We passed by Bayeux to take a gander at centuries-old and still intact tapestry. Day 3 was spent in a Saturday market and mostly in the most visited place in provincial France - the abbey in its own island - Mont St. Michele. Beautiful, very beautiful part of Normandy. And we're just on Day 3. This picture of a graffiti using moss on one of Arromanches' major artificial docks is funny. Someone wanted to place the Philippines part of D-day history (which happened btw on June 6, 1941, exactly 62 years ago today). Not me, huh. |
