On Being Open  Open Manila, Philippines, July 2004 I'm currently reading "My Life" of Bill Clinton. I'm pretty much sure that not everything that happened in "his life" is in his book to be devoured by everyone. Walking further and past the bookstore's Biography section and the many books on the shelves made me think , "What moved famous people to reveal their lives? or a portion of it ? " Is it plainly to inspire the next generation of readers? or maybe other than the fact that they seal their greatness with a memoir, they do it with a double edged sword and rake in millions. Digressing allowed, only 10% of me is here in this journal. That means, even if you've read some parts of the blog at one time or another in the last 2 years, you would have known only a portion of me. Even those who we think bare their soul in their journals have kept a great part of their persona intact. What about the readers? Do readers become voyeurs? Personally, I go through blogs of friends to know what they're reading, how their weekend was, how they felt after watching a movie, or maybe the links of news items that caught their fancy. I'm pretty sure that voyeurism to the extent of getting the juiciest details of someone's innermost desires, thoughts and bedroom secrets is not in the agenda of most readers. Definitely not my objective too. Add to this, that as readers, we merely want to empathize with the blog owners we follow and NOT try to resolve their problems pretending to be shrinks. 100% Self-revelation is optional. What is important is that we are sincere about our openness. Bill Clinton in his book still calls the infamous act as a mistake. That in my book is openness and humility of one great man.....
