Good Health and Embracing Change Mississauga, Ontario – sportswriter Grantland Rice, on Mildred Babe Didrikson Zaharias It's her birthday. I've always referred to March 17 as my lucky day, not only because it is St. Patrick's Day but for obvious reasons. There is little known fact that she is the more adventurous, the more talented and the more intelligent between the 2 of us. I only come across as the go getter and the action man, but behind all, it is she who can learn a new instrument quickly, has a sense of balance, and most of all look young even at this stage of our lives. We met probably 30 years ago. Probably since, even if we stayed in one school for almost one-third of the day back when we were in Grade School, we never came across as acquaintances. I was into books and the visual arts, she was into singing, acting and sports. I graduated to various activities in university, she coasted along, but despite this, she missed being an honor student by a few points. She's into sports that I can't possibly even do, that includes swimming, skiing, skating, and all the "S" sports in the world. I'm into the B's - bowling, basketball, billiards, boxing, yes, your typical Pinoy male - who doesn't play but watch and have a beer on the side. :) I'm not really sure what she can't do or wouldn't do. She said she wanted to learn how to play the violin, so I bought her one and the next week, she was already playing it. She said she wants to skate on real ice (yes, Megamall skating doesnt count) and last weekend she just rented skates at Nathan Philips and had a grand time reminiscing how it felt when the skates were rollerskates and falling down means a few scratches and not breaking a femur. She is the renaissance woman, who can easily do old stuff, learn new things and doing both, just blows me away. It's her birthday today. I can't bake a cake, I can't play "Happy Birthday" on violin, much more sing it well, but I know what I can do - I will be thankful to the Lord for bringing her to my life. **************** Broad: n : slang term for a woman; "a broad is a woman who can throw a mean punch" **************** Mildred Babe Didrikson- was the first superwoman, an All American in Women's basketball, she played organized baseball and softball and was an expert diver, roller-skater and bowler. She also played billiards and lacrosse. She won two gold medals and one silver medal for track and field in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. But more than that she won 17 straight women's amateur victories, a feat never equaled by anyone, including Tiger Woods. This after learning the sport at a late age of 24 years old. Some people thought that Babe was supposed to be pronounced Dave. That's where they got it wrong. Women can do things Men do, even better. ********** The Bible in Proverbs 31 speaks well of what women can do. The bible tells us, "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." — Prov. 31:10 I did. << |
